Hirose’s mouth would remain shut, while the others would deny any involvement, and Ueno’s perplexed reaction and denial of Shouya’s claims of her also being a participant in Shouko’s bullying: I mean, just look at how much Hirose was shitting himself in this scene while Shouya was essentially being betrayed by the people who he thought he could trust the most: And since the girls were indeed badmouthing her, with Ueno being the main perpetrator and Kawaii just laughing along and going with it, everything that Shouya said here wasn’t exactly wrong:īut his efforts were to prove futile. Shouya tried to defend himself by saying that he wasn’t the only participant, and while Shimada may have not done quite as much as Shouya in terms of the direct bullying, he was nonetheless always the first one involved (after Shouya) in all of the incidents. However, when push came to shove, she along with the other three participants of Shouko’s bullying couldn’t bring themselves to reveal their actions, and they instead all just threw Shouya under the bus, leaving him to shoulder all of the blame for any wrongdoings towards Shouko: In the manga, Ueno’s admiration of Shouya is explored in further depth, and she explains how she never thought that she had any reason to oppose Shouya’s malicious behaviour, because she saw him as somewhat of a hero: Yet, Ueno admits to that, but Kawaii didn’t, which is something I’ll touch up on later on. Ueno may have sometimes thought that Shouya was taking things too far, but she never made any attempt to actually stop him, none of them did. With regards to Shouko’s bullying, Shouya was obviously the main perpetrator, but Shimada, Hirose, Ueno and Kawaii all took part in it as well, regardless of how indirect their participation may have been: However, Ueno was never really shy about it, and therein lies one of the roots of the future conflicts. The latter instantly became another target for Ueno’s verbal harassment: She had voiced her opposition towards learning sign language to make things easier for Shouko, but when Sahara volunteered to learn it: Nonetheless, she was shown to admire him very much, and perhaps was even influenced by him in her bullying antics. These feelings of hers were obviously hinted at in the movie, with the earliest example being how she was shown to often steal glances at him when she thought that he wasn’t paying attention:īut it was never really confirmed. However, in the manga, while it may have taken her a while to verbally admit her feelings for him, she eventually did so: Although, she was definitely shown to at the very least, consider him an especially important person to her whom she was very protective of. She was never shown to explicitly harbour romantic feelings for him in the movie because this was only slightly implied in the adaptation. The most significant and damaging of the omissions from the movie adaptation regarding Ueno’s character, is her love for Shouya. And really, what more could you ask for from a character? She had an unparalleled ability in the series to keep the viewers and readers on their toes, because she always had a certain aura about her an aura of uncertainty, of doubt, of ambiguity, and this trait of hers caused the readers to be constantly suspicious of her, meaning the readers and viewers were always thinking of her. However, Ueno has a complexity to her character that the movie only scratched the surface of, and I think more viewers would have been able to appreciate just how well written she is, had they been exposed to even half of the depth that the manga delved into regarding her character. This made her a very easy target for viewer hatred because Shouko was obviously that sympathetic deaf girl who was always trying her best to make the most out of a very difficult situation. Ueno is very blunt and straightforward, often to the point of rudeness, which was demonstrated several times in the story, most notably towards Shouko. Whenever she was in a scene, she immediately added this underlying sense of tension and unpredictability, which I find is a very powerful trait for any character to have.Īs a side note Anon - I know that you sent me this a while ago, but as you’ll soon see, I put a lot of effort into writing this It’s undoubtedly the longest post I’ve ever made, so hopefully you’ll find that it was worth the wait □ To be honest, I had never really considered who my favourite character was, and now that I’ve thought about it and have written this exceedingly long analysis on her, I’ve realised that Naoka Ueno is actually my favourite character in A Silent Voice She just added such spice to the story. She’s a very interesting character, and that’s why I was indeed a fan of her.
